Raymond V. Steed born Newport 01/10/29 Dis. A. No. R281123. Killed 26/4/1943. Have been in touch with TNA to try find CRS10 & Seaman's Pouch.
While I will have to wait until Monday for any results, does anyone use the Ancestry.co.uk website. I have tried umpteen times to try different searches and even signed up for the 14 day free trial, but I can find nothing remotely near to the person I am looking for. Anyone sure just how good their records are. I'm presuming Raymond Steed is not an alias as he was assigned a Discharge Book. I'm curious to find out more on this youngest known Second World War service death. |

Hello Billy,
As far as I know EMPIRE MORN never docked in NYC or any other US port recorded here http://stevemorse.org/ellis/boatx.html?mode=ny regards Roger |

Thanks Roger,
I was asuming the ship must of been somewhere on the East Coast of the US. When Raymond's body was recovered he had on his possession "a wallet containing personal papers and 2 U.S. dollars" |

Hi billy
Could this be what you are looking for: BT 372/576/106 R281123 STEED R V 01/10/1929 NEWPORT Also: Online Document BT 395/1 Name Steed Raymond Victor , R28423 Date: 1928. The second discharge book number is different, could it be a mis-input regards Tom Harrison |

Thanks Tom,
The BT 372 file is the Seaman's Pouch I have on order. I tried a medal search earlier and it came back blank. I have tried again and found his medal file and downloaded it. It is definately the same lad as his Dis. No. R281123 is printed on the document. The number R28423 is wrong as you say. Also his Seaman's Pouch gives date of birth in 1929, his medal file 1928. According to his medal file someone claimed his medals but not the ribbons. His family received the 1939-1945 War Medal, 1939-1945 Star, Atlantic Star & Africa Star with Clasp. Thanks a lot for that Martin, just what I needed. I have ordered a copy of his Birth Cert.
Ray, I was the contributor to that article on the BBCi site. The username Deep Sea McGee was the nickname I was given on my first trip to sea. |
