Hello all,
The Fourth Register of Seaman's Service (1913 - 1940) - the original cards are held at Southampton City Archives. The Fifth Register (1941-1972) is held at the National Archives in Kew. I hope the scans below will make clear what you can expect from Southampton Also have a look at this link from the National Archives: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/c...fletID=128&j=1 Regards

Hi Thanks for the lead, Hugh, the four scans great information.
I am trying to track down records of when changeing Articles in foreign British Ports. 1918/1941 in particular. The crew list and details of all on board to be handed to customs at the first British port of call London etc.. Required. Name of ship/Port of Registry/Port arrived from/ date/Commencement of voyage date place/Agents. The info on this document Required Full name/Ref No.in agreement/Nationality(place of birth/Age/Race/ Capacity in which engaged/Place and date of engagement place date. Remarks The original Copy to be delivered to the Superintendent, Mercantile Marine Office; and the Duplicate Copy to the Customs Boarding Officer at the vessel's first port of call in Australia/overseas, Penalty 5 pounds. Plenty of good information available if you can get it, but certainly no privacy attached "In thems Days" sailing on British registered Ships. Regards Ron(S).
