Received another reply from Cheshire Archives
Thank you for your email of 20 February. Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding. This has been due to the unusually high volume of enquiries received since January. I hope this has not caused too much inconvenience. We hold records relating to the historic county of Cheshire including the Wirral but not including the Mersey. The most likely source of information about the sinking of the barge is likely to be newspapers though it is possible due to the war, that reporting of the incident may have been censored or restricted. The main newspapers which we hold relate to Chester and the surrounding area. I would be very surprised if they included any report of the sinking of the barge. Either Birkenhead or Liverpool newspapers are the most likely sources of information and they can be accessed at Wirral Archives and at Liverpool Record Office. See: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a...ils.asp?LR=140 and also: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a...ils.asp?LR=138 If the bodies of the crew were recovered then there would have been an inquest. Wirral Archives and Liverpool record office would be able to advise on the availability of coroners' records. I know that we have none which would extend to an incident in the Mersey and the information in such records as do survive is so poor anyway that it is usually possible to gain more from the newspapers. If the bodies were not recovered then the deaths would need to be registered with either the Board of trade or the admiralty. Their records are held at the national Archives and you should refer to their "Research Guide for Births Marriages and Deaths at Sea" for further details: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/c...fletID=246&j=1 Regards

Hugh, do you think there is any likelyhood of persuing this further?

Stewart,
We are almost at the end with this one. I think the only place to go now is the Liverpool Record Office. They say a search will take more than 15 mins so are looking for the paid research service to be used. Best bet would be for me to find a local Scouser prepared to have a quick look. Regards

Sorry for the late come-back. Very busy at the moment with our daughter's first house which she moved into last week. I say moved, she hasn't really as it requires a great deal for man and woman hours before she does move.
It's not that far from me, and I always like rummaging in Record Offices, but can't get down there for the time being. If no one comes up with an offer, I'll have a go at it. Stewart |

Liverpool Record Office will be packing up and moving out soon (whilst the Central Library is rebuilt!) - some material will be housed in the museum next door but the bulk is, I believe, being moved to a remote site, so best give them a ring before you visit.

Thanks for that Albert, I wasn't aware. Still stuck with my domestic issues at the moment and probably for another two weeks or so. Got to get rid of her
